Hi Clint,

We run PAL through a scheduler (automatic), so we use the pal.ps1 (with the parameters from the pal wizard.)

After sometime and some PAL process some BLG files, I see that iexplore.exe is getting started and eating up a lot of memory.
It causes the automatic started jobs to fail, not the first ones, but later on the day, and more iexplore.exe getting started on the system.

I use 2.3.3 x64 version (multithreaded) and use multithreads 2 or 4 according to blg file.
We first had a 32 bit version of pal, but it took to long to process all BLG files for a day, but it never started an Iexplore.exe process. is there away to prevent PAL from starting the iexplore.exe in the commandline?

This occurs regularly though sometimes it does finish properly. The HTML file is always partially completed when this error occurrs. Things I have tried:

-Run as administrator
-Number of processing threads, tried the values of 1 and also 4 (my system has 4 cores), same resultes either way.

Thought I would throw this up here so maybe someone else might have an idea why it's happening.

I created a perfmon template file using the SQL thresholds to look at 2 instances and created the data collector set. This is running fine.

FYI. I added a parameter check in v2.3.5 that will look for single quotes in the file path and if found will stop processing and point out the problem. There is nothing I can do about getting around it due to how Powershell handles single quotes a literal string delimiters.

I am gathering performance logs from 7AM to 7PM daily. When I try to restrict the PAL Tool analysis to a time within this an error is generated when the report is run. The PAL Tool report runs fine when I don't restrict the times. When I select the '.blg' file, the PAL Tool fills in the correct begin and end DateTimes for the entire log period. I was then simply changing the times to times within this range and running the report.

Also, PAL needs at least 30 data point within the time range. Otherwise, it might refuse to do calculations on it. The log restriction tells PAL to create a new counter log that is within the time range provided. Then, PAL separates the new counter log into 30 time slices by default, so at least 30 data points are needed. Keep this in mind when using the time restrictions.

It might be due to the dash (-) in the counter log path. It might be having a problem with passing it into the other script with that character. Try another file path that doesn't have special characters. Also, the one that works has the AllCounterStats argument enabled. This matters because the bad one had it disabled (default) and failed to match any counters which would cascade into lots of errors. I would need to know the counters in the counter log to know if any of them would match the analyses in PAL.

Can you send me the output of "Relog /?"? I want to see what the syntax shows for you on the -b and -e settings because it is likely dd/MM/yyyy for you and MM/dd/yyyy for me. With all of that said, Relog supports yyyy/MM/dd, so I'm hoping to just use that format as a standard.

The single quote in the path H:\ASRL's to the log file is causing Powershell to think that it is the beginning of a literal string. Analyze counter logs in a different file path that does not contain single quotes or other special characters.

Hi there,

I seem to be having some trouble using the PAL tool. I was running it against some logs from SQL 2000 on a Windows Server 2003 machine using version 2.3.3 and it was maxing out the CPU for more than 30 hours but producing no output. Input blg files were no more than 1.5GB in total. I then decided to run it on another server with multiple cores but it's only running 2.3.2 and I can't change that. (Enterprise environment, can't change stuff without multiple change records) It is no longer maxing out the CPU although it using nearly 2.5GB of memory. I am just worried about leaving this runnign over night again to find it's just done nothing again.

And from here nothing else happens. Any suggestions? The CPU and memory usage fluctuate suggesting that something is being done but after 7 hours so far today I have no idea whether to cancel it or not.

Good to hear that you got it working. 90,000 samples is an extremely large counter log. Consider using the Relog.exe command in the operating system to reduce the size.

Just wanted to ask if somebody is trying to use the 2.3.3 build on Windows8 x64?.

So because i have following Problems:

1: i'am getting hammered with that Errors in the Txt attachment (Error.txt)
2: i'am getting the html Output, but everything after "Memory % Committed Bytes In Use" is not in the HTML overview. if i have a look in the Folder > the Pictures are theire for all Counters.
(lastmessage.txt.).

PS: i logged in binary mode a VPS ~24H 5sec Duration. and this i used for a "System Overview" to analyze with PAL.

Regarding Windows 8, I've been running and testing PAL on Windows 8 for at least 6 months now. When you get the prompt to install, choose the Install Anyway option and it should go through. Alternatively, just copy the PAL installation folder from another computer and it should work fine.

Scrap that, found the problem. I'd stupidly set the time interval to the same time interval that I took the perfmon logs on i.e. 15 seconds. Left it at auto and it worked fine. I'll leave this up here in case anyone else has the same issue.

Unfortunately I do not have the luxury of changing back to Windows 7 :-(....even tried compatibility mode .

Will wait for the Windows 8 update ..which should be soon right ?..you guys at Codeplex do some really good stuff for the community and apparently the Windows 8 release is like just around the corner ;-).

So i switched to Windows7. And no Problems theire. Problems are on Windows8. So i used a VM with Win7 now ;)
